Twin-hull power catamarans are superior to traditional mono-hull
boats in that they are extremely stable, fast and fuel efficient.
Some of them top out around 40 knots, but they’ll consume less
fuel than a little 90-horse outboard skiff. You’re able to do some
really dramatic things with them, too!
MAXWELD
BOAT customers hail from the Northwest, California, Hawaii, the
East Coast and Alaska. The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Department
has purchased two MAXWELD catamarans to be used by patrol
personnel on the Columbia and Willamette rivers. The Washington
Department of Fish and Wildlife also purchased several MAXWELD
crafts with which it patrols waterways along the Canadian border.
Below are a few of the comments of our many satisfied clients.

"MAXWELD doesn't take any shortcuts." That's the answer I give
when asked about our new boat, a 22' MAXWELD Scout. The attention
to detail from the welds to the wiring is obvious. Compared to our
old boat, a welded 18 degree deadrise boat the MAXWELD is in
another class. The reverse chine design gives the MAXWELD a much
softer and drier ride and the overall construction of the boat is
much stronger.
We
fish mostly in the ocean, but once in awhile we go to the Columbia
River or a lake, so we needed something that could safely fish
offshore and easy to trailer. Some of the "Must haves" on our list
included self-bailing deck, welded aluminum w/non skid deck,
self-draining anchor locker and built in fish boxes. We got all
these and more.
Andy
and the MAXWELD crew were great to work with and everything was
done on schedule and done right the first time. Whether it's
chasing tuna or trout this boat performs beyond our expectations,
to say we are happy with our decision to have MAXWELD build our
boat would be an understatement.

As a lifelong sailor it was a strange choice to get a fast boat.
But we have had Justine for a little over a year and are very
pleased with her. She takes us places we would not visit under
sail. The first summer we went to the west coast of the Queen
Charlottes; this year we have already been to Butte Inlet in BC,
and to Barkley Sound on Vancouver Island. Justine gets us there
fast and in comfort. We normally cruise at around 30 knots, but
slow to 22 knots when the swells get really big. The fuel economy
is about the same at either speed, a little better than 1 nautical
mile per gallon. She is probably more heavily loaded than most of
your boats, we carry a 13’ RIB, a sailing dinghy, a rowing shell,
4 downriggers, multiple crab and prawn traps, and everything we
need to live on board for a 6 week trip.
Everywhere we go we receive complements about how good Justine
looks – and not just from guys. Andy, you did a great job in
translating our sketches into a very usable interior. It is nicely
laid out and comfortable, and of “yacht” quality. The wiring and
welding are much better done than we have seen on other custom
boats. The systems are expertly installed and work well.
Most of all I have to compliment you on your after-sales service.
Thanks for sending guys to Seattle to fix the few small problems.
I highly recommend Maxweld and its crew, and am proud to show off
our boat. Gary Wood

Prior to having my MAXCAT built, I owned a fiberglass boat for
about four years, but I really needed a larger boat for family
members and to better handle cruising in British Columbia and
Southeast Alaska. I could not find what I was looking for in a
fiberglass boat, so I did some research and found Andy
Heathershaw, owner of Maxweld Boats, Inc. in Hebo, Oregon.
Andy had been building aluminum catamarans for a number of years
and was receptive, as well as willing to build exactly what I was
looking for. In fact, he built my boat to better standards than
what I could have ordered myself.
We first proved the worthiness of this boat on her maiden voyage
by running it up the Oregon Coast, across the mouth of the
Columbia River to Westport, Washington in weather that was
predicted to be ok, but worsened by the hour and left us little
choice but to keep going.
The boat performed perfectly then and for the rest of the season
in all sorts of water conditions from the Puget Sound to Juneau,
Alaska, as well as offshore.
I have to admit that we built a boat that was more than I needed,
but I intend to correct that with the next boat I am currently
planning to have Andy and the Maxweld crew build me. I am
one totally satisfied customer!

I had my
MAXWELD boat custom built in April of 2007. If I could to do it all
over again I wouldn't change a thing about this boat or who I had
build it.........Good people and a great company, very well built
boat!
You can see this boat in person at Hammond Mooring Basin, slip D-5. I
run a fishing guide service fishing for Salmon and Sturgeon in the
Ocean and Columbia River. Come catch a fish and get a boat ride.

We would like
to thank Andy and the crew at MAXWELD BOATS for the fine workmanship
done on our MAXCAT. We appreciate the comfort, performance and excellent
economy. Andy helped us throughout the process and we were impressed by
his attention to details. There are so many things that were done as
part of their routine that we would have been unlikely to think of on
our own. Much was built-in to enhance the durability and function of our
boat. Keep up the great work.

The following
is an excerpt from an article written by Stuart Tomlinson about the
catamaran we built for the Multnomah County Sheriff's office:
"It was an old-fashioned christening, rife with patriotic symbolism.
Politicians spoke. The mother of a fallen soldier swung the bottle of
sparkling cider. A Portland fireboat spouted jets of water - red, white
and blue. An 11-year-old girl was credited for coming up with the
catamaran's name: FREEDOM. A recoding of Woody Guthrie singing "Roll on
Columbia" acted as a preamble to the raising of a flag that had once
flown above the U.S. Capital.
Thursday afternoon at the James Gleason Boat Ramp on the Columbia River,
about 200 people sat and stood in the broiling sun to dedicate the
Multnomah County sheriff's gleaming new river patrol boat: 7 tons of
dual hulled technology, bristling with antennas, radar dishes and
spotlights.
Built in Oregon with U.S. Homeland Security dollars to protect shipping,
dams and boaters, the boat is made to patrol the river even when the
stiffest east winds howl out of the Columbia River Gorge." |

In my opinion MAXWELD BOATS is a well kept secret.
What an awesome boat for the price. It could even be considered
overbuilt, as Andy does not take shortcuts on quality.
I have had mine for 2 years chartering in Petersburg, Alaska and nobody
has passed me yet.
Fuel consumption is incredible (.80 gallon per mile at 35 MPH).
For stability, economy, and space, a CATAMARAN is the only way to go. |

Not a day
goes by or a person walks by that my MAXCAT does not receive a major
compliment. Here's a sample:
One day I was running along side a 33' MAXWELD MONOHULL and the captain
looked over and said, "Now, that's an awesome Beast!"
A fellow charter guide asked my clients how they liked fishing in the
"Maserati" of Craig, Alaska.
One of my clients said, "Mike, this is the finest fishing boat I've ever
been in!" (This guy has fished for 35 years in all types of vessels.)
The MAXCAT is so comfortable that some of my clients actually fall
asleep on the run home! I could go on and on with the complimentary
quotes, but you get the picture.
Am I happy with this boat, you ask? ABSOLUTELY! I had very high
expectations from the beginning. This boat meets them all and
delightfully more!

I
would highly recommend MAXWELD BOATS to any prospective buyer looking
for a custom aluminum boat.
I am completely convinced that I got the most value, the best attention
to detail, and the highest quality of construction for my money at
MAXWELD BOATS.
The crew at MAXWELD BOATS made the entire boat buying experience a
success for me. Andy worked with me in planning, designing, and building
of my customized MAXCAT. I had very specific requirements in a boat and
right from the very beginning it was clear that MAXWELD BOATS knew how
to deliver exactly what I was after. Each MAXCAT I've seen has some
unique features that set them apart from other MAXCATS, but flexible
design and quality construction is common to them all.
From the first ride I took in a demo boat, I was amazed at the stable
ride that the catamaran hull delivers, even in the roughest waters. I've
had my MAXCAT for 6 months now, boating in Southeast Alaska through out
the stormy winters and I cannot say enough about the great ride of a
catamaran hull. I know that no matter how nasty a gale blows up, my
family and I will be safe as we run for cover.
We use our MAXCAT for family adventures while out sport fishing,
subsistence harvesting of shellfish, and hunting for deer and moose. We
are pretty serious about our fun, so this boat gives us a margin of
safety that we didn't have before. For our use, I wanted a boat that had
plenty of sleeping-quarters for friends and family, and also wanted a
large open galley with dinette for comfortable, warm seating for
everyone aboard while underway. Even with this much cabin space, the cockpit
area is huge!
There is only one change that I would make if I could. That would be to
have bought a MAXCAT years before! |
